The beginning was January 12, 1985 with a meeting of some half dozen old iron enthusiasts
at the home of one of our charter members. This informal gathering prompted a later
meeting at Southaven, MS on February 2, 1985 which was attended by some 18 to 20 people.
Officers were elected and agreement to apply for club charter.
Mid South Flywheelers, Inc. was granted a non profit charter by the State of Mississippi
in April 1985.
There seems to have been a race to see which members (family or group) can get the most,
biggest, oldest, oddest, and smallest of anything that would attract someone or anyone
attention. It's nearly like going to a large flea market to go to a members home or place
where he keeps his prize possessions. Some refer to our members as antique
collectors. It doesn't seem to be much selling done by any members, just acquiring.
The first two years of shows, in which Mid South Flywheelers has participated have really
brought back a lot of memories from the old days. Many people including club members
had no idea that old engines, grist mills, saw mills, boat motors, whistles, hay balers,
tractors, rock crushers, auto's, mowers, crawler tractors, water pumps, corn shellers,
washing machines, food processors, plows, wrenches, cornbread cooking items, spark plugs,
oil cans, railroad lanterns, apple peelers, magnetos, water rams, shingle mills, belts,
wagons, literature and many other items were still available much less being able to
locate them in this area. Most items owned by club members date between the 1880's
to the 1950's. You might even see something of odd nature dating in the 1980's.
The Mid South Flywheelers would like to have you as a member. Please feel free to
discuss joining with any member. You are always welcome as a member or guest. |
